Imao Keinen is a noted woodblock print artist from the late 19th century, specialising in birds and floral subjects. His lovely woodblock prints are naturalistic representations of birds in their native habitat and the beautiful Japanese flora.
Keinen’s most famous work is ‘Keinen Kacho Gafu’, a stunning four-part work of woodblock prints of birds and flowers in the four seasons. These prints were full Oban vertical size in a natural soft colour palette.
This print, from the Autumn series, depicts an owl resting on a branch, it’s wings splayed in vivid autumnal colour.
