Shunga is the Japanese term for erotic pictures, which grew in popularity throughout the 18th century, peaking in the golden age of print in the late 1800s. Many ukiyo-e artists also produced shunga alongside their normal specialities, as the work sold well and often at higher prices. Erotic work was rarely signed, however notable artists in the field included Hokusai, Shigenobu and the great Utamaro. Their work had a great sensitivity to the subject, and showed remarkable beauty.
