Crag Lough - John Grey

Crag Lough - John Grey

John Grey
Crag Lough
Etching with aquatint
21 x 21 cm

“John Grey is a printmaker based at Ushaw, County Durham. He makes his prints by acid-etching polished and aquatinted metal plates which he then individually inks and prints onto Somerset Satin paper using a traditional hand press. The limited life of the metal plates means that these are true limited edition, original prints, not reproductions.
Much of John's work is inspired by the landscape and architecture of the North East of England. John's earlier work developed out of many years of working with traditional monochrome photography. Many of John's earlier, steel plate etchings are based on his photographic work. In the last few years John has moved to using brass plate etchings based on sketches of subjects. Using sugar lift and spit bite techniques has allowed him to develop a freer, more painterly approach to his work.
John regularly takes part in art fairs and markets in the region and is a member of a number of regional arts and printmaking organisations. His work is sold in galleries in Newcastle, Bishop Auckland and Hexham. Until 2019 John produced most of his work at the Northern Print studio in Newcastle. He now has a studio at Ushaw, near Durham City.”
