Between 1937 and 1960, art critic Tériade commissioned some of the most prominent figures of the contemporary French art scene to produce lithographs for his luxury art journal Verve. Only 38 issues were ever published, each one richly illustrated with original prints editioned at the renowned Atelier Fernand Mourlot.

Pierre Bonnard (1867 — 1947) was a French painter and printmaker, and a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde painters Les Nabis. Bonnard preferred to work from memory, using drawings as a reference, and his paintings are often characterized by a dreamlike quality. The intimate domestic scenes, for which he is perhaps best known, often include his wife Marthe de Meligny.
