Between 1937 and 1960, art critic Tériade commissioned some of the most prominent figures of the contemporary French art scene to produce lithographs for his luxury art journal Verve. Only 38 issues were ever published, each one richly illustrated with original prints editioned at the renowned Atelier Fernand Mourlot.

Georges Henri Rouault (1871 - 1958) was a French painter, draughtsman, and printer, whose work is often associated with Fauvism and Expressionism. His use of stark contrasts and emotionality is credited to the influence of Vincent van Gogh. His characterisations of overemphasised grotesque personalities inspired the expressionist painters.
