We are excited to announce the launch of our second Open Exhibition of work by local artists this November. The exhibition will showcase an abundance of artistic talent, featuring 81 works submitted by 54 artists from across the North East, many of whom are new to our gallery. The show brings together a diverse range of practices, from landscapes to abstract paintings; etchings to screen prints; sculpture to textiles; and celebrates the wealth of creativity in our region.

Newcastle and the wider North East is home to a thriving art scene including several artist-led studios, museums and independent gallery spaces. After a difficult year, where the creative industries have been hit hard by the pandemic, we also know they are central to our recovery. The creative industries have the capacity to change behaviour, bring people together, empower communities and transform individual experience.

The first Open Exhibition we did in 2019 was a really varied show - colourful pop-art prints, delightfully intricate drawings and traditional landscape paintings, contemporary abstract works, geometric pieces, carved natural stone, silver jewellery, cast glass and more. It was a fantastic, lively exhibition and a really well-attended preview. It was a great experience, that we found well worth doing and repeating again now in 2021. We are still working with some of the artists we met through our last Open Exhibition and are excited to see what this next one will look like.

Our last Open Exhibition in 2019

This exhibition will provide a chance to discover new creative voices and give a fresh outlook on creativity in our region. We view the open call process as a great way to start new relationships with artists and look forward to welcoming these new faces to the gallery alongside more established artists, and to giving a new platform to the breadth of creative talent that we live amongst.
