Dogger Bank & Equinor Commission - Foundation Press with SS Peter & Paul RC Primary School students

As part of our project with Dogger Bank Operations and Maintenance Base, we were asked to brighten up their stairwells with art, and to showcase the work of children to broaden to the spread of creative voices within the base. We had the pleasure of working with Deborah and Adam from Foundation Press who we commissioned to produce three stairwell designs using Riso printing, and working with year 3 and 4 students from SS Peter and Paul Primary School in South Shields.

Year 4 students took part in a workshop with Foundation Press in July 2023, drawing the ships in and around Port of Tyne, and their mechanical movements when installing Wind Turbines in the North Sea. Using abstracted sections of existing vessels and their own designs, students ‘shuffled the deck’ to construct new designs and patterns. These drawings and patterns have inspired the final design.

Can you spot any turbine towers, jack ups, ships’ funnels, cranes, or portholes? Can you recognise any objects being lowered or raised?

Year 3 students took part in a workshop using their bodies, drawing and playing with stickers and printed patterns to investigate what the wind might look like. Inspired by these forms, Foundation Press have created a print using overlapping colours, lines, arrows and stickers to imagine the directional or confetti-like movement of the wind.

They also created drawings to describe a windy day, a gentle breeze, a stormy day, and wind turning a windmill. Foundation Press have incorporated aspects of these designs into the coloured design you see here.
