Francis Bacon

FRANCIS BACON
14th October - 19th November 2022

Francis Bacon, Derrière Le Miroir, November 1966, Cover, Lithograph, 37.5 x 27.5cm

We are excited to present a small selection of original Francis Bacon lithographs from French magazine Derrière le Miroir, edition No. 162, published to celebrate the occasion of Bacon’s second solo exhibition in Paris, at Galerie Maeght, 15 November – 31 December, 1966.

French publisher and gallery owner Aimé Maeght of Galerie Maeght, conceived Derrière le Miroir as an art magazine and art object, presented in a large (11” x 15”) format. Over the magazine’s lifespan, 1946 – 1982, it created original lithographs for some of the most major artists of the twentieth century, including: Bacon, Léger, Miro, Calder, Tàpies, Chillida, Braque, Matisse, Giacometti, and Chagall. There were also contributions from poets and writers such as Aragon, Beckett, Char, Eluard, Prévert, Queneau, Reverdy, Sartre. For many years Galerie Maeght was the most important gallery in the world for contemporary art.

Francis Bacon, Isabel Rawsthorne, Lithograph, 31.5 x 25.8cm

As well as Bacon’s signature unflinching psychological intensity and eye for composition, what is remarkable about these prints is the visceral surface quality of the ink and vivid colour. This exhibition features individual works and triptychs from this edition.

This is a really affordable way to own an original Francis Bacon print, framed expertly in a style we think Bacon would have approved of.

Francis Bacon (1909 – 1992) was an Irish-born painter known for his raw, unsettling imagery. Focusing on the human form, he acquired a reputation with his unique style that has only grown since his death. Bacon said he strove to render the “brutality of fact”, his subjects including portraits of close friends, self portraits, popes and crucifictions. He often painted subjects over sustained periods, creating series and often triptych or diptych formats, often isolating his subjects in rooms or using compositional geometric structures. He is widely acknowledged as one of the giants of contemporary art.
