MAKERS OF BESPOKE FRAMES | CONSERVATION MOUNTING & FRAMING | GILDING AND RESTORATION

We treat every picture framing job as special: a snapshot, a postcard, a medal or a sketch are all worthy. Small photographs may seem humble compared to large oil paintings, but may have taken much more time to create.  Framing is an art form in presentation, but is also a skill: it is about preservation, knowledge of materials, and careful handling, all learnt over years of experience.

Real, professional framers are hard to find. Framers like us, with a genuine understanding of appropriate presentation, conservation practice, and the need for real works of art to stand out for themselves in a well considered and made setting, as well as the true expertise required for handling and manufacture. We offer hundreds of options of moulding and mountboards, as well as a range of specialist glazing, ready to frame anything that you bring to us.

We do gilding and frame restoration, provide a picture conservation service, picture installation services, and all our framing is carried out in our new, specialist workshop in Gateshead.

We have over 70 years combined experience in picture framing, and want to share our knowledge about making art look its best, and staying that way, with everyone - no matter whether you want to frame a valuable 18th Century oil painting or a quick family photograph. We’re always free to offer our advice on the best way to frame or conserve your picture, with the bottom line being that it suits you!

Our Story:

Gallagher & Turner was established in Newcastle in 1990 by Paul Gallagher and Clare Turner. Formerly based in the St. Thomas Street workshops, our gallery on St. Mary's Place has a lively, changing programme of exhibitions, whilst our workshop in Gateshead houses all of the technical expertise to get your frames looking beautiful.

We have exhibited and framed work by many highly regarded artists, including David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Barbara Rae, Antony Gormley, and Elizabeth Blackadder. With over seventy years' combined experience, we specialise in Modern British art, as well as antique Japanese woodblock prints, and pieces from mid-Century France and America. We also regularly work with exciting, upcoming artists from the North East and elsewhere in the UK in order to showcase the best new work that the region can offer.

We have framed works for several museums, universities and other institutions, including The Hatton Gallery, The Laing Art Gallery, Auckland Castle, Northumbria University and Newcastle University.
With experience of framing everything from 18th Century portraiture through contemporary art, posters and family photographs, we're sure to be able to provide top-notch service for your framing needs.

We aim to make high-quality art accessible to everyone in Newcastle, and indeed further afield, whether it’s something to treasure on your own walls or something extra special we show in the gallery. Our exhibitions, and advice on framing, are always free, and we’re happy to talk through anything you want a better understanding of. Just come and see one of our team when you’re ready.

We are pleased to be able to offer the Own Art scheme, allowing you to spread the cost of buying great contemporary art.

Own Art is supported by Arts Council England, and allows buyers to borrow from £100 up to £25,000 over ten months interest-free (representative 0% APR). This can be used to purchase one or multiple works of art, or put towards the cost of a more expensive artwork, and lets you split up the cost of your purchase into ten more affordable, monthly payments.

Gallagher & Turner offer Own Art as a purchase method on almost all work by living artists. Get in touch or visit our gallery to find out how to use it, but note that some identifying documents may be required to process an application, so please check with us in advance of an Own Art purchase.

Own Art allows fantastic art to be accessible to all, no matter what you want to buy!
