Gallagher & Turner was established in Newcastle in 1990, and has since become a staple of the North East’s remarkably vibrant art scene. Previously based in the historic St. Thomas Street workshops, a former stables for the Deuchar’s Breweries, the new gallery on St Mary’s Place was opened in early 2016, directly opposite the famous Civic Centre. This year represents the 30th anniversary of the partnership, and the gallery team look forward to sharing the highlights of their distinctive collection of artists.

In the past three decades, Gallagher & Turner have been proud to show works by such renowned artists as Antony Gormley, David Hockney, Maggi Hambling, Norman Cornish, Barbara Rae, Joan Miró, Keith Vaughan, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Ellsworth Kelly, and countless others. There have also been fantastic collections of work shown by well-respected local and regional artists such as Brita Granström, Peter Quinn, Paola Ciarska, James Williamson Bell, Oliver Doe, and Josh Raz, giving a platform to both established talent and recent graduates from the city’s two fine art degree programmes.

With an exceptionally high standard of workmanship in framing, conservation, and restoration as well, Gallagher & Turner have also worked on pieces by the likes of Francis Bacon, Gilbert & George, Patrick Heron, Duncan Grant, Fiona Crisp, Ian Davenport, and Cornelia Parker, for some of the UK’s leading galleries, museums, and collectors. With over sixty years’ combined experience, they remain one of the most prominent art framers in the North of England.

This Summer, the gallery will present a selection of work by some of these exhibited artists, celebrating the rich and vibrant history of exhibitions that have taken place over the last three decades. Visitors can expect a diverse show, ranging from our specialities in bold Modern British art and exquisite antique Japanese woodblock prints, through exciting contemporary painting and printmaking, with some beautiful glass sculptures to add some three-dimensional flair.
