Protect & Survive, a solo show of work by North East painter Gavin Watson, is currently on show at Gallagher & Turner from November 26th 2020 - May 2021. In this video interview Gallery Manager Jenny Mc Namara interviews Gavin in his studio in rural Northumberland.
The interview includes a tour of his studio and shows works in progress. Highlights include Gavin speaking about developing his artistic voice, the role of art in society and world domination!
For the past 40 years Gavin has worked as a professional artist and is now based in in rural Northumberland where he works in his home studio. His paintings have been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and are held in private collections in the UK, US, and Europe.
Informed by the rich visual culture of the region, his paintings explore the relationships forged between humans and animals, and the internal and external worlds they share. The narratives within Gavin’s work are multi-layered and playfully reference a diverse range of sources, from literature and art history to popular culture and contemporary issues. All of these elements are constantly at play, resulting in mildly surreal paintings which hint at a larger narrative beyond the dreamlike scenes they represent.
