‘Celebration’ is a woodcut inspired by the garden flowers I grew for my daughter’s August wedding. Plants featured in the print include Cosmos, Dill, Cornflower, Ammi, Fern, Basil, grasses, Cotinus, Flax seed pods and Love-in-a-mist seed pods, just some of the many flowers grown, watered, dead-headed and nurtured through the long, hot summer to produce flowers for bouquets and decorations. My intention with this print was both to celebrate and remember a time of great joy with family and friends gathering, and also to pay tribute to the wonderful vitality and beauty of the flowers I grew throughout the season. ‘Celebration’ is printed from 3 blocks in 11 colours on Kozo paper, using oil-based inks. Edition limited to 20
Artist Statement:
I am a printmaker living in Newcastle upon Tyne.
I specialise in woodcut, although in the past I have created prints using etching, drypoint and lithography.
I studied Fine Art at Newcastle University in the 1980's where I developed an interest in printmaking, and I became a member of Charlotte Press in Newcastle in the late 1980's. I have been printmaking for the last 30 years or so though not continuously, time raising children meant that printmaking took a back seat for some years. For the last 12 years I have been a member of Northern Print where I occasionally print and teach woodcut. My studio is in my home, and I have recently bought an Albion Press which has enabled me to continue printing - my previous tool being a wooden spoon and elbow grease.
